3 Trail Essentials Every SXS Rider Needs for the Mountains

Conquering mountain trails is all about the views, the thrill, and, most importantly, making it back under your own power. Whether you’re navigating tight switchbacks or pushing through a rocky ascent, the terrain is unforgiving on your machine.

To help you stay prepared, we’ve rounded up the top 3 must-haves we never leave home without.

1. The Spare Belt

If you’ve been riding for any length of time, you know the sound of a blown belt. In the mountains, high elevation and steep grades put massive strain on your CVT system.

Don’t just throw a spare belt in the cargo box. Make sure you have the specific belt type AND the belt-change tool for your machine (ie. clutch spreader tool for RZRs). A spare belt is just a heavy rubber band if you can't get the clutch cover off.

2. Heavy-Duty Tire Patch Kit

Mountain trails are notorious for jagged rocks and sticks. A flat tire can turn a sunset ride into a late night tow very quickly.

Unlike a slow leak on a dirt road, mountain punctures often require plugs. Carry a kit with high-quality plugs and a sturdy reamer tool.

3. Portable Air Compressor

Once you’ve patched that tire, you need to get it back to PSI. A hardwired or battery-powered portable compressor allows for multiple fills and lets you adjust your pressure if the terrain gets extra slick.

Bonus: The "Just in Case" Item

A Quality Tow Strap: Even if your machine is running perfectly, you might encounter a fellow rider whose isn't. A 20-foot recovery strap takes up almost no room but is worth its weight in gold when the trail gets technical.

What’s the one thing you never hit the trails without? Let us know in the comments!
